The Aims of the Friends of St Mary’s

The Friends of St Mary’s Church was set up with the purpose of raising funds to contribute towards the preservation and maintaintenance of the fabric and furnishings of St Mary’s Church for the benefit of the congregation and the people of the city.

The Friends have supported a number of projects financially, including stained glass window protection grilles, some draughtproofing work at the west end of the church, repairs to the organ and the bells (and the drains) and moveable display screens. They will be meeting the majority of the cost of essential stonework repairs at the west end of the church.

While the core of the Friends is made up worshippers at St Mary’s, people from all over the city and beyond, especially those with connections through marriage, baptism or other family connections or memories of the church are most welcome to become members and support the civic church of Southampton, so that it can be open and available to be enjoyed by all.

Membership is open to all those who wish to keep this 'Civic Church’ of Southampton open and available to be enjoyed by many.

As well as individual membership we also welcome corporate membership from companies and other organisations who wish to help in the work of the Friends.

Events such as bazaars and concerts are held in St Mary’s both to boost funds and to get together for a social occasion. Friends of St Mary’s will be welcome to such events. Details are posted in the Parish Newsletter "TakeAway News", available weekly in our churches.

Legacies
One way to remember and commemorate the work of St Mary's Church is through a legacy. As a registered charity legacies are exempt from inheritance tax. Your solicitor will be able to advise on a suitable form of words. Our treasurer may be able to help if you wish to discuss the matter on an informal basis
